FOURTEEN

They followed the tree line south as best they could. The ground was rugged and uneven, with lots of clumps of vegetation and long grass growing between the trees, which made walking difficult. On top of that, they were constantly hiking at an angle which made them feel lopsided. Grant was used to it from previous tours, but Lilly was taking the strain. Each mile took the better part of an hour.

Every now and then they’d move deeper into the vegetation to avoid a dwelling or group of dwellings. The simple, rectangular houses hung precariously to the steep hillside like a stack of matchboxes positioned on top of one another. If something happened to the bottom one, they’d all fall down.

Grant glanced worryingly at the sky. It was getting lighter faster than he would have liked. Soon it would be daybreak and they’d have to take cover, for it would be too dangerous to continue. The hillside and indeed the lush valley plains were filled with shepherds, farmers, fishermen and any number of people during the day. Lilly, who was a few steps behind him, said, “How long have we got?”

He liked how she caught on to what he was thinking so quickly. “Half an hour at the most.”

She didn’t reply, but picked up her speed which he knew must have required effort. On top of her exhaustion, all the items in their bergens were now wet, which would add additional weight, and they hadn’t eaten for hours.

“As soon as daylight breaks we’ll hole up and eat something.” She gave a nod, like talking was too much effort. Her hair was completely dry now, but the tendrils at her temples clung damply to her forehead. He too was perspiring despite the coolness of the early morning, but it beat being freezing cold. It seemed in this place there was no in-between.

They trudged on until Lilly began stumbling. That was his cue that she was too exhausted to continue. He began looking around for a place to camp for the day. They needed to be completely out of sight from anyone who might happen to walk past. Eventually, he stumbled upon a clump of trees that grew closely together providing all-round coverage like a green circular hedge. Their roots intertwined in the middle making natural armchairs for them to sink into.

“This is it,” he said, helping her into the middle. At first it looked like she was going to refuse his hand, but then weariness overcame her and she let him help her in.

It bothered him that she was acting so offish since their kiss, but he knew it was probably for the best. She was dangerous for him and she was off-limits. Pat would freak out if he knew what had happened. Joe’s girlfriend, and he couldn’t control himself in her presence, but when he’d held her in his arms it had felt so right. There was no other way to explain it. When she’d turned her face up to his, he hadn’t thought twice.
